The pick: fēnix 9 Pro inReach 51mm Solar, $1,299.99 at REI (cost = lowest concern, per Roby 9/11).
Only watch that does a full week of normal-mode tracking (75 hrs, 124 with sun), newest generation, titanium, satellite weather. Not at the PX and not on sale — which means REI's 10% dividend (~$130 next March) actually applies, plus 90-day returns.
Budget alternative: fēnix 8 Pro 51 at the PX, $1,049 tax-free thru 9/18 — same satellite + LTE + maps, but the week of tracking needs Max Battery mode.
The tactix 8 in the case has no satellite and no LTE — the 67i would still ride in the pack.
Read before retiring the 67i. Every Garmin watch uses a different satellite network than the 67i (geostationary Skylo, not Iridium). Garmin's own fine print: "Satellite connection and SOS functionality on this device have important limitations compared to other inReach devices."
You hold your wrist up and point it at the satellite; trees, ridges and steep valleys block it. Reviewers on the fēnix 8 Pro saw messages take 1–5 minutes and sometimes fail; one rated its signal coverage 1 out of 10 as a rescue beacon.
Plain English: on the wrist it is a convenience messenger with an emergency backup, not the 67i's guaranteed lifeline. Roby's call (9/11): that trade is fine — the watch is free weight, the 67i is pack weight plus a charger and only lasted 3 days in Explorer mode. The 67i stays home.
Side by side
Scroll sideways on a phone. Green column = the pick. Grey columns = what you own now. Battery numbers are Garmin's claims (Solar figures assume 3 hrs/day of full sun).

This is the one thing the Samsung does that no Garmin can (Garmin rejected Hevy's API request — Hevy's own note). Garmin's built-in Strength mode does click-off sets + rest timer + auto rep count, just not in Hevy. Or: Samsung on gym mornings, Garmin the rest of the week. | |||

Where to buy
- PX (Redstone): fēnix 8 Pro 51 $1,049 / 47mm $949, tax-free, sale 9/11–9/18, in stock. Does not carry the fēnix 9. Ask the cashier for the electronics return window — AAFES uses a shorter one than its 90-day default.
- REI: same sale prices on tactix 8 and fēnix 8 (thru ~9/20). Members get no dividend on sale items, so the "10% back" argument is dead this month. Returns: 90 days on GPS electronics, member or not. Carries the fēnix 9 Pro inReach at full price.
- garmin.com: matches the sale; the military discount runs through GovX and does not stack with sale prices. Only place with every fēnix 9 configuration.
- tactix 7: still full price new ($1,299–1,399) — costs more than a tactix 8. Dead buy unless refurbished (~$780–900), and it has no satellite either.
Before you retire the 67i for good
- Still worth one test from the backyard and under the trees at Monte Sano, so you know what to expect before you need it.
- Check your bank on Garmin Pay's bank list.
- FarOut stays on the phone — no Garmin map carries shelters, water and hostel notes.
