Betrayal and Authority of the Messiah.
V. 47
1. Jesus’ reponse to Judas.
There could have been up to 1,000 men or as low as 250. Part of the crowd are the Roman soldiers. Another part from the Levitical priests and the Sanhedrin. We notice that everyone is constantly misunderstanding Jesus’ mission. They fear he will lead an insurrection.
Judas never greats Jesus as anything other than Rabbi or sage or prophet or teacher. Never Lord.
V. 49
Judas was so good at his sin he his it from his closest friends, but not Christ. 1.5 years earlier he told Peter that He had chosen all the disciples, yet one of them was a devil. Note that the disciples did not chooses Christ.
V. 50
This is the first time he was restrained. He always was able to move through angry crowds because it was not time. Now it finally was His time. But actually, binding his hands was only the allure of control.
2. Jesus response to disciples.
V. 51
We know this is Peter, and he was zealous to prove that he wouldn’t betray Jesus.
Why did Peter have a sword? Luke tells us that Jesus heale the slave. All the disciples asked if they should fight.
V. 52
Is Jesus teaching pacifism? No, since that would oppose His future plans, the book of Revelation. His message is not spread by forced violence. Hindus, Muslims, etc. Well, duh. What dies this mean for us?
1. Terrible thing have been done “for Christ”. Crusades, etc. Don’t equate modern wars with advancement of the gospel.
V. 53
This was 72,000 angels. Later he will have ALL the angels with, many more.
V. 55
3. His response to the crowds.
This is foolish he is telling them. They could not counter his teaching or take him in the open. Only under the cover of darkness could they take him.
V. 56
At the end of this Christ was left alone. This is also 11 other betrayals.
How can we show Jesus’ authority in our lives?
1. We can show the authority of Jesus in the face of evil men and evil circumstances.
2. By prioritizing His kingdom works. Major on the majors. In His era they were focused on Roman oppression, not what his ministry was really about. It isn’t up to us to convince others in our words. That is Gods job.
How do I orient my household on what matters most?
Moms how do you train up your children?
3. By resting on the promises of Gods word. A pursuit of Gods word. A desire for his word?
Do I crave to read his word?
Psalm 119. Teach me oh Lord. We must study, read, memorize, internalize.
